Bulgaria is a country in south-eastern Europe, situated on the eastern part of the Balkan peninsula. The country's official name is Republic of Bulgaria.  Bulgaria has a total area of about 110K square kilometres and is bordered by Greece and Turkey to the south, by Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, and by  Romania to the north. The Bulgarian Black Sea coastline (378-kilometres) covers the country's entire eastern bound and hosts several high-class summer resorts.  The landscape of Bulgaria includes mountainous areas like the Balkan (the longest mountain on the peninsula), the Rhodopes range and the Rila range with its peek Musala, which is the highest peek on the Balkans. In contrast to the mountains, two plains represent the Bulgaria's lowest and most fertile regions - the Danubian one in the north and the Upper Thracian one in the south. Sofia is the capital and the largest city of Bulgaria. The other major Bulgarian cities are Varna, Plovdiv, Burgas, Rousse, Pleven, Stara Zagora and Veliko Tarnovo. According to statistics the country of Bulgaria is among the first in the world for the number of its archaeological monuments. Today’s land of the Bulgarians is one of the ancient springs of Europe civilisations.
