Macedonia Overview
Macedonia is a landlocked country in Southeastern Europe, lying on the central part of the Balkan peninsula. Its official name is the Republic of Macedonia and is one of the successor states of the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Macedonia is a member of the United Nations since 1993, but as a result of a dispute with Greece over its name, the country was admitted under the provisional reference of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, often abbreviated as FYROM. The official language the country is Macedonian. Its origin comes from the Slavic people who have settled in the region of Macedonia during the reign of Tsar Boris I of Bulgaria, around the 9th century. The country borders Bulgaria to the east, Serbia to the north, Greece to the south, Albania to the west and Kosovo to the north-west. The country's capital and largest city is Skopje. The other major Macedonian cities include Bitola and Kumanovo. |
